University of Michigan's Sweetland Writing Center: Visual Rhetoric and Graphic Design Handouts

Task

  • To create one-page handouts providing a quick overview of core graphic design concepts for use in the Sweetland's Multi-Literacy Center

Goals

  • To increase the general level of students' visual communication skills to complement (instead of hindering) their writing
  • To help students effectively present research using new media
  • To train peer tutors in basic graphic design techniques

Challenges and Limitations

  • Each handout could be only one page long.
  • Handouts had to be instantly understandable by people with no graphic design or art background.
  • Handouts had to be reproducible on a standard photocopy machine.

Solutions

  • Handouts explain each concept verbally and demonstrate concepts visually
  • In addition to instructional handouts, a combination self-test/checklist handout helps students verify their understanding of key concepts

Results

  • Three one-page, double-sided handouts: Graphic Design Introduction, Intermediate Graphic Design, and Graphic Design Quiz/Checklist
  • Available to students in print and PDF formats
