Challenges and Limitations

  • Most students do not have access to Photoshop for homework or practice
  • Students complained that I counted graphic design ability toward their grade, though they were not trained graphic designers.
  • Users of varying abilities including dyslexic students and students with almost no computer experience

Solutions

  • Spiral instruction requires repetition and practice during each class/lab session, plus two review-only days
  • Revised grading to focus solely on Photoshop mechanicals and degree of help students need
  • Paired mid-level students and low-level students. Mid-level students learned more thoroughly, and low-level students had personal help that wasn't advanced beyond their understanding
  • Revised assignment sheets to give detail on how composite images need to be constructed
